PotatoWorld 22-01 Foreword

The content of this blog is the foreword from the Editor in Chief, published in PotatoWorld magazine 2022/01.

To achieve success, it's important to have a passion for the goal you want to reach. This applies to both business and private goals, which are often intertwined. Passion and perseverance are also needed when you breed potato varieties. This is what I saw this summer, when I saw the multitude of flower colours and leaf shapes in a trial field where the breeder was enthusiastically trying to find the variety of the future. And this is what the Dutch sector is good at. Every year, even better varieties are added to the Varieties List. After publishing our e-book, prior to the variety presentation days, we asked our readers what requirements they place on a new variety. This resulted in a multitude of answers. So we wondered how the breeding stations themselves make their choices to operate successfully in the market. We’ve written down their visions in a comprehensive story from which I think much can be learned.

Also, a lot of knowledge can be gained during the upcoming World Potato Congress this year. This international event will take place in Ireland at the end of May. This is the country whose inhabitants themselves say that they have potato DNA in their genes. Due to the infamous Potato Famine in 1845, a lot of Irish people emigrated to many other countries. A visit to the Congress may be a meeting with ancestors, but especially with other potato professionals from many countries. Last summer, I already got to know the potato culture of that country. In this edition is a report about what Ireland and the Congress have to offer. In any case, we as Team PotatoWorld will be present and hope to meet many of our readers there in person.
